INTERNATIONAL READOPTION
Since adopting my own daughter from China in 2007, I have assisted clients in the re-adoption process here in Florida. Though Florida does recognize foreign adoptions, there are some reasons you may want to re-adopt.
First, by re-adopting your child once here in Florida, you may obtain from the Department of Vital Statistics copies of his/her birth certificate equivalent (Certificate of Foregin Birth) for years to come. This may be especially important as your child grows and wants to apply for a driver license, marriage certificate and/or possibly even adopting one day themselves.
Second, most families generally will want to change their child's name from the original given name(s). This can, and usually is done at this time as well.
Third, though Florida does recognize foreign adoptions, not all states in the US do. What if you move to a state that does not recognize foreign adoption decrees? Maybe they may not be considered an heir in a probate matter? Maybe they may not even be able to secure the documentation years later to assist them in obtaining basic licenses, such as a driver license and/or marriage certificate. By completing the process of re-adoption, they will always be able to verify to any agency of any State when they were born by being able to obtain from the Department of Vital Statistics a certified copy of their Certificate of Foreign Birth.
Please contact my office today for a consultation concerning the applicability of re-adoption to your personal situation.
